LATITUDES

Music composed, performed, engineered and produced

LATITUDES is a nearly 72-minute long excerpt from the music installation created for "Latitudes de Latinidad en América", an exhibition of photography of Cuba by artist, Raúl Menjívar. The exhibition was held at the California State University, Domínguez Hills University Library Cultural Art Center from March 18 to June 15, 2014.

The LATITUDES music installation consisted of four computers with speakers dispersed throughout the gallery. Each computer was an independent sound source featuring 24 diverse elements: music, spoken word excerpts from José Martí's Nuestra América, Taíno poetry, rainstorms, life and other ambient sounds, and silences of varying lengths. Each computer was set to shuffle and repeat all. The elements we'd prepared came together in unexpected and unpredictable ways. This representation of the installation mimics the experience of walking around the gallery, at times closer to one sound source and farther away from others. LATITUDES ran continuously, 24 hours a day for three months without ever actually repeating the same combination of sounds in exactly the same way.
